The Studio

The tuba and euphonium studio at the University of Wisconsin-Madison consists of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degree in music performance and music education. Many undergraduate members of the studio also engage in studies outside of music through the UW-Madison dual degree program. For more information on degree offerings, click here.

Tuba and euphonium students at UW-Madison have weekly lessons, studio classes, and studio ensemble rehearsals. In addition to guaranteeing a great deal of contact between professor and student, these weekly meetings foster a sense of camaraderie and collegiality within the studio which benefits students of all levels. I believe this environment of close collaboration and personal attention leads to musical and individual growth and allows the student to explore and hone their own musical voice.

Low Brass Ensemble

Co-directed by myself and Mark Hetzler, Professor of Trombone, the UW Low Brass ensemble is comprised of the tuba/euphonium and trombone studios. This ensemble performs two concerts on campus each year as well as various concerts throughout the community. With repertoire ranging in style from early music to jazz, rock, heavy metal and experimental modern music, the UW Low Brass Ensemble is an exciting and dynamic group. In addition to performing with the group, tuba and euphonium students are encouraged to compose and arrange for the ensemble. The UW Low Brass Ensemble also provides opportunities for interested students to gain experience conducting.

Chamber Music

Participation in the chamber music program is highly encouraged within the UW-Madison School of Music. Students have the opportunity to form their own chamber ensembles which are coached by a member of the brass faculty for course credit. For tuba and euphonium students, chamber ensembles can include brass quintets, brass trios, tuba quartets, tuba and euphonium quartets, and just about any combination of which a student can conceive. In addition to creating their own chamber groups, students have the opportunity to observe rehearsals and performances by the Wisconsin Brass Quintet, ensemble-in-residence at UW-Madison, on a regular basis.

Studio Class

Studio class takes place each week and consists mainly of student solo performances, chamber ensemble coachings, and audition and recital preparation. On occasion, studio class sessions take the form of discussions on a range of topics including performing and practice techniques, career development, and insights on the profession of music

Large Ensembles

Each member of the tuba and euphonium studio participates in a large performing ensemble each semester. Ensembles include the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and multiple jazz ensembles. With a relatively small studio and a multitude of ensembles, there are ample performing opportunities for each student.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a world-renowned research institution which affords its students a first-class college experience. With an enrollment of more than 40,000, the University is an enormous place with many, many smaller niches and communities in which each student can find a place for themselves. Tuba and euphonium students at UW-Madison have access to all the resources such a large institution provides while also enjoying a built-in community with their fellow music students.

Madison

In addition to the UW-Madison campus community, the city of Madison is a thriving cultural and artistic center. With a symphony orchestra, ballet, opera, chamber orchestra, and many more professional music ensembles, Madison offers many opportunities to experience classical music. Thriving jazz, rock, and underground scenes occupy a host of live music venues throughout the city.
